History

Oya’s name comes from the river of the same name in Nigeria, where she is worshipped, now called the River Niger. She is the Orisha of wind and storm, fanning the flames and amplifying Shango’s lightning bolts before battle. Oya has a dual personality, both gentle and impetuous, like an icy silence before a great storm. Her object of power is a whip called “iruké”. Oya protects wounds and drives away spirits, guardian of the dead she guides men and women to the 9 heavens according to their good and bad deeds. Invoking Oya removes the presence of death from the living. Its sacred numbers are 9, 4 and 2.
